Hajj and Umrah are both pilgrimages to Makkah, but they differ in timing, obligation and rituals. Here is a simple explanation of how they compare.
Timing and obligation
Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and is obligatory once in a lifetime for every Muslim who is physically and financially able. It is performed only during specific days of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah. Umrah is a highly recommended (Sunnah) act that is not obligatory and can be performed at any time of the year.
Rituals and duration
Umrah consists of Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i and trimming the hair, and its core rituals can be completed in a few hours. Hajj includes all of these plus additional rites performed over several days, such as standing at Arafat, staying at Muzdalifah, and the stoning of the pillars at Mina. As a result, Hajj trips are much longer — often 20 to 40 days from India — while Umrah trips are typically 7 to 15 days.
Which should you choose?
If you are able to perform Hajj and have not yet fulfilled this pillar, it carries the highest priority. Umrah is a beautiful, accessible pilgrimage that can be performed at any time and is often undertaken multiple times throughout life. Many pilgrims from India perform Umrah first and Hajj when the opportunity allows.
