What is Umrah?

Umrah is a pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah in Saudi Arabia that Muslims can perform at any time of the year, unlike Hajj, which takes place on fixed dates in the month of Dhul Hijjah. It is often called the “lesser pilgrimage”, though it holds great spiritual significance.

Performing Umrah involves entering the state of Ihram, circling the Kaaba (Tawaf), walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah (Sa’i), and trimming or shaving the hair (Halq or Taqsir). Most pilgrims from India also travel to Madinah to pray at Masjid an-Nabawi, the Prophet’s Mosque.

The rituals of Umrah

Ihram: Before reaching the Miqat (a designated boundary), the pilgrim enters Ihram — a state of spiritual purity. Men wear two white unstitched cloths; women wear modest, ordinary clothing. The pilgrim makes the intention (niyyah) for Umrah and recites the Talbiyah.

Tawaf: On reaching the Masjid al-Haram, the pilgrim performs Tawaf — circling the Kaaba seven times in an anti-clockwise direction, starting from the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad).

Sa’i: After Tawaf, the pilgrim walks seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, commemorating Hajar’s search for water for her son Ismail.

Halq or Taqsir: Finally, men shave their heads or trim their hair, and women trim a small length of hair. This marks the completion of Umrah and the exit from Ihram.

How to perform Umrah step by step

1. Make the intention and enter Ihram before crossing the Miqat. 2. Recite the Talbiyah on the way to Makkah. 3. Perform Tawaf around the Kaaba seven times. 4. Pray two rak’ahs near the Maqam Ibrahim if possible. 5. Drink Zamzam water. 6. Perform Sa’i between Safa and Marwah. 7. Shave or trim your hair to complete the Umrah.

Umrah vs Hajj — the key difference

The main difference is timing and obligation: Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and is obligatory once in a lifetime for those who are able, performed only during specific days of Dhul Hijjah. Umrah is highly recommended (Sunnah) but not obligatory, and can be performed at any time of the year.
